From the Principal

Dear Merritt Families,

It is with much excitement that I introduce myself as the principal of Merritt Memorial School. For the past three and a half years I have served as the district’s K-12 Social Studies and then K-12 Language Arts Supervisor. In that time, I have worked on a variety of initiatives throughout the district, including our elementary school’s recent work around literacy, Reading Workshop, and Writing Workshop. Prior to my time as a supervisor, for four years I taught fifth grade at Merritt. I feel incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to lead at Merritt and grateful to be back home.

Merritt Memorial School is a unique and special place. Its students are talented, driven, and curious about the world around them. Its staff is compassionate, hard-working, and dedicated to the success of every student. Merritt families are involved in and supportive of their children’s education in countless ways. The building itself, originally built in 1929 and at one point serving the community as a theatre in addition to as a school, speaks to the value that Cresskill has and continues to place on the education of its students. Put simply, Merritt Memorial School is a great place to learn.

I believe that elementary school is a crucial time in children’s development. The experiences students have here are formative and they cultivate empathy, passion, curiosity, and persistence. Elementary school is a place for children to be supported and cared for as they take the risks and make the mistakes needed to learn and grow. There is no better place to do that and to, as the Cresskill Public Schools mission statement states, “foster self-esteem in a dynamic, caring environment and will prepare students to be lifelong learners and contributors in an evolving and ever-changing world,” than here at Merritt.

I look forward over the next few months to meeting and working with you, getting to know your children, and supporting the Merritt staff in all of the great work that they do for our students. Please know that my door is always open and please do not hesitate to reach out should you have any questions, concerns, or just want to chat. I can be reached by phone at 201-569-8381 or through email at I look forward to hearing from you.
